Tovrea Castle Summer Hours

There was little time for a Castle related excursion this week due to holidays, pirates and writing adventures, but I cannot go without mentioning the change in tour hours and summer plans without feeling as though I am shirking my duties on this subject.

Tovrea Castle tours will not cease even in the summer heat! July through September Tovrea Cararro Society docents remind visitors to wear lightweight clothing, apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water on the outdoor tours but please do not let the desert heat keep you from experiencing this amazing site. In fact, the early bird 7:00 AM tour time might be an even better reason to schedule during the summer. What could be a more inspiring start to the day than a sunrise view of the spectacular castle and grounds? We dare you to have a bad day at work after that.

So, please, do not forget our humble castle this summer!

Food & Fitness: Trainer Bio

I met Frank Levreau in 2011 with no idea that he would be my fitness partner in 2012. Frank has aspirations to be a full time personal trainer and nutritionist and I really feel his story is inspirational. It is also a testament to Frank’s dedication!

In December of 2009, Frank was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes. His blood sugar was at 850 and his kidneys were dangerously close to failure; a frightening diagnosis at twenty-eight years old. The culprit; 8000 calories per day of primarily fast food, long stretches of seated video game play, and bouts of depression.

After the shocking news from his doctor and a trip to the emergency room, Frank made the choice to save himself. Gone were the burger and greasy fries, he switched his calorie intake to 1200 per day in multiple small meals. In five months time, Frank dropped 125 pounds! In a week, Frank was off the insulin. He dropped his kidney medication in a month and his sugar production leveled out after only two weeks. He kept his exercise regimen fairly simple, just going with what he had learned when in school and later joined a gym.

Frank’s scare factor made his efforts work for him in just five months, but with his clients he foresees the program working in a year to a year and a half. The basic plan is similar to what Frank used with changes to each client’s needs.

Drawing from his studies on history and antiquity as well as a little something more geek related (I will touch on that later) Frank hopes to create a fitness and nutrition system a bit more interesting than average. There is not a whole lot of grain in the dietary portion of the plan, but there is room for it if need be. For fitness, Frank recommends adding a hobby, or play time to normal day to day activities.

An example of a meal comes from Nomadic Germany; roasted deer meat with baked potatoes. Dessert consists of blueberries and walnuts.

And of course, from the Spartans, the lords of fitness; some compound exercises like basic weapons training drills and the always classic push-up.

I promised something really different at the beginning of this blog. Frank is still a hardcore gamer and geek. He is proud of this and I think that is awesome, because I loves the gamers. But, what does gaming have to do with health and fitness?

How about some squats like Zack in Final Fantasy Seven? Shadow boxing like Zell in Final Fantasy Eight works too. My personal favorites come from Link in Legend of Zelda; like the overhead pig press, or a nice cardio chicken chase!

Most important Frank says to stay motivated create game related goals. Finish a quest and reward yourself with a walk or a run up and down the stairs. Every twenty minutes, try jumping jacks or those classic Spartan push-ups.

Instead of chips and soda and energy drinks, try snacking on those treats your adventurous characters might have handy; nuts and berries, maybe jerky, with water or herb tea. Frank also recommends taking a page from a World of Warcraft cookbook! I had no idea this existed!

Overall, Frank seems pretty sure that my belly dancing, sword fighting, and acting out character roles might work well enough for me and for anyone else out there with a geek slant, maybe it is time to choose the role of Luke or an Assassin instead of Jaba.

Food & Fitness Week One: Hiking and Eggnog Almonds

Just like everyone else with a normal body weight in a society that champions the uber fit and anorexiacs, I am starting a workout and nutrition regimen for 2012. Yeah, I know, we shall see how long it lasts this time. I already dance nearly six days a week, clean the house, sword fight, and chase cats, but the other hours of the day really are dedicated to sitting on my tush getting writer’s butt. It turns out I may actually have a champion on my side though this time who will not give up on me. Maybe. Well, we shall see.

Frank Levreau has this epic story of how he lost gobs of weight and when I met him I did not believe the pictures of the ‘old’ Frank were for real. I hope Frank will allow me at some point to blog about his entire story, but for now I will cut to the chase since this is the first fitness and nutrition entry. It is all pretty typical as far as I can tell so far, I have to track my nommings, the exercise I currently get, and make sure to get enough sleep. Same old, same old.

Today, a nice walk outside, since I am a nature gal as well as a geek. I was excited to find algae, what I used to call Mermaid Hair, growing in the water near Rio Vista Recreation Area. We also found this odd looking plant that I would love insight on if anyone has anything. JD went along since he is out of school. He did more climbing on the walls of the wash than anything. I was not feeling quite that motivated to over exert today. I like just being in nature. If that means I have to amble six miles instead of running three, I am totally okay with that.

Frank made awesome banana, strawberry smoothies after the walk and a trip to Sprouts.

Frank’s Strawberry/ Banana Smoothie

½ cup Australian style plain yogurt

3 large strawberries

1 small banana

1tbsp honey

1tsp coco powder

I could not leave Sprouts without a bag of dried cranberries, walnuts and pecans, so I have been nomming on those all day. JD bought almonds and dried papaya cubes to mix together. The kid also discovered eggnog coated almonds. I thought he was going to die. I did not try them but JD assures they are amazing.

Yes, a ride to Sprouts and smoothie making, all part of the fitness plan/ coaching. Epic, yes? I would love to know what everyone else is doing, maybe it would give me some new ideas to try to stay motivated.

Health and Food: Walking Week Two, Plus Recipes

At the start of 2012, I am taking a very big step back from many of the performance activities that I am currently part of to focus on writing. Stepping away from performance work means much less physical movement. To avoid any possible spreading of the derrière while I spend more time sitting on it, I have devised a plan!

About a week ago, Jess and I began a walking routine that put us on a six-mile circuit through town. I am excited to say that despite the early morning hours (6:00AM typically) and the enormous blisters on my feet because I am not used to wearing anything more than sandals, it is pretty easy going. Once it becomes too easy we will have to increase something, speed would be the simple answer. On the days that Jess cannot walk due to her school schedule, Frank has offered. Just as with Jess, we meet at half way. The route in his direction happens to bring us directly to a nice park with a racquetball court. A half hour game sounds like a plan to me!

I have been trying to work on my diet choices as well. I am not going to say that any of the food I am eating is the healthiest but it does keep me away from fast food, sweets and most things that come in a bag or box. This week:

Breakfast: Virgin Bloody Mary

V8 Juice (or tomato juice)

Dash of Tabasco

1 tsp. lemon juice

1 tsp. Worcestershire

Pepper to taste

Lunch: Tuna Sandwich with Homemade Potato Chips

Tuna Salad

(makes 6 servings)

3 cans tuna

½ block of cream cheese

1 tblsp. lemon juice

Mayonnaise to taste

2 cloves garlic crushed

Salt & pepper to taste

Soften cream cheese and mix all ingredients until smooth.

Homemade Potato Chips

Thin sliced red potatoes

Olive oil

2 tblsp. White truffle oil

Parsley (to taste)

Parmesan cheese (to taste)

Thinly slice red potatoes, he thinner they are the better this works, too thick and they may as well be home fries. Bring olive oil to temperature (about 300 degrees). Toss in potatoes and cook until they begin to turn brown and curl up. Some may bubble, it happens. Allow potatoes to cool on paper towels. Toss with truffle oil, parsley flakes and parmesan.

Dinner: Pork Chops with Broccoli in Cream Sauce

This is a crockpot recipe. I am not a fan of cooking so if I can manage it only once a week I am very, very happy!

1 – 2 lbs. thin sliced pork chops (I use the ones without the bone)

3 large heads of broccoli or one bag frozen, cut florets

1 large can cream of chicken soup

1 large red onion

3 cloves garlic

Salt & pepper to taste

Brown pork chops. Cut broccoli or thaw if frozen. Add chopped onion, crushed garlic, salt & pepper to cream of chicken soup (do not add water) in the crockpot. Stir in broccoli and browned chops. Cook on low heat 4 – 5 hours.

I did not add any desserts or snacks this time, but I admit that I love Lorna Doone cookies!
