Writing Gift: A Short Story About Mud Pies

Mud Pie Woes
A Short Story

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the on scene reporter bellowed over the din, “we are at the edge of what appears to be the largest, well,” she paused to collect her thoughts, “mud puddle in the Tri-state area. No one is quite certain how this puddle formed but local university geologist, Peter Kline, and his assistants are on the scene in an attempt to answer that very question.”
The camera panned over the expanse of dark brown muck that had taken over the corner of Fraugh and 92nd Street.
“Geez Ray, can you believe this mess?” Karen mumbled to her camera man as she stepped out of the frame to adjust the lapels of her powder blue blazer.
“I have never seen anything like it, ma’am.”  Ray continued his pan of the devastation.
Ray zoomed on what looked to be a gable similar to the surrounding homes, as the tip blipped out of sight into the soft earth, Ray scanned the crowd for more interesting activity.  The frame tipped over the top of a small head bobbing through the chaos.
“We should really get an interview with Kline.” Karen checked her makeup in the reflective surface of the camera.
Ray switched off camera to conserve power before seeking white lab coats.
“He looks busy at the moment.” He said and gestured a man in uniform.  “We could interview the new deputy first.”
Karen nodded. They picked between throngs of people and the edges of the gummy ground.
Police officers struggled to control the growing swarm of onlookers surrounding the tremendous bubbling, brown pit.
“Please, people you have to back away.  No one’s sure what caused this or if it could expand.”  The young officer called into the crowd.
Deputy Henderson’s looked over the mud puddle with resentment that his first time out was not his ideal police assignment.  He sighed and continued pushing back the crowd.
Henderson caught sight of a small figure sneaking between a group of legs just out of range.  Before he could move in on the situation or send another officer to do so a large man shouldering a camera blocked his way.
The lovely but stern news anchor, Karen Owen thrust a microphone in the young officers freckled face.  Henderson was trapped.
He put on his best public relations face and prepared for questions he could not answer.
“Approximately nine meters across sir judging by the calculations of the circumference.”  Gregory offered clip-boarded notes to his supervisor.
“Yes, yes,” Professor Kline nodded; he flipped pages of the report, “but do we have any idea as yet how it was formed?”
Gregory lolled his head side to side before turning his attention back to the burbling center of the pool.  The crowd, those that saw, backed away a bit from the burping lake.  Gregory’s encounters nor case studies, ever offered such a strange occurrence.  He looked to Professor Kline for guidance but his mentor’s face was a contortion of confusion.
A tiny tug at his lab coat pocket drew Kline’s attention to a small girl.
“Mister,” her pale doe eyes shimmered, “I’m real sorry mister.  My friends and I, well, we din’t mean to make such a big mess.”
Kline raised an eyebrow at the small, filthy child.  “How did you get past the barricade, young lady.”
Gregory moved to shuffle the child back to the line of officers, knowing how little tolerance his superior had for children. The girl wriggled free of Gregory’s grasp leaving slick mud wherever his coat touched her hair and clothing.
The professor raised a hand to allow the child to speak.
“Well, sir, see we just wanted to make a mud pie.  But see, the pipe in back of the house,” the child’s eyes welled, “it burst.” Streaks of pale cheek appeared through the blackish caked mud as tears washed the mud.    “My mom is gonna be so mad.  She just washed the sheets this morning.”
Gregory heard his voice blurt before he could compose himself.  “Little girl, are you saying that your house is in the middle of this puddle?”
The child nodded, a flood of tears running down threatened to add to the puddle.
Professor Kline looked from the girl, to the puddle, to the reports in his hands.  Gregory watched for some cue of the mood the professor might choose.  Ray’s camera was rolling but Karen merely held the microphone near the professor’s face.

Writing Prompt: Cooking

This did not go like I planned....

In the past I have not been considered a great, or even a good, cook. My ex-husband and some of our mutual friends often mocked my cooking. Baking especially was not a forte. They still ate the food though, which was always strange. I just assumed they were hungry enough, and kind enough, to tolerate my disastrous kitchen offerings. This is why I found it so odd when I started to have friends who actually said nice things about the food I would throw together.

I went from being the kitchen leper to the one asked to bring that one amazing dish. I did not change. I was making the same things. I was doing the same processes. My still horrible baked goods proved that. I realized that it was not that my food was bad, it was that there was so little appreciation for it. I was no master chef, of course, but the food was made with love and a flair for the creative. I liked to add something a little different. Once again, likely the reason why baking, not my best sport.

After a while, the praise for my creations did something miraculous, I was becoming a better cook. I did want to make some of the more complicated treats. I offered to teach others as I learned. The interesting thing, some of those who I taught started to comment about how poor my cooking was, but over the same dish I had just helped them create. Classy right. That is when I knew it had nothing to do with my skills in the kitchen. This was about acceptance.

I am a decent cook. I like to made enough to feed an army, and fill tummies with comfort foods, so exotic fare is not my focus. This does not mean that I cannot whip up some interesting menu items, but it does depend on when, why, and who I am serving.

I am actually really proud to say that I am no longer serving the people in my life who only offered complaints and rude comments. I am thrilled to feed the stomachs and souls of good people though. I equally am happy to have these same friends bake for me, since, yeah, that is still a bit shaky.

There is a deeper meaning to food. We use it to connect with others, so if those around you are taking in what you are offering but only giving back negativity, stop feeding them. What does cooking mean to you? And what is your favorite dish to serve those you love?

I am also thinking about restarting the Nomday recipe posts. That could be a kick.

Writing Prompt: Wishes

When most of us think about wishes, it is typically to do with genies in magical lamps, fairy tale god mothers, good witches, or some other magical creature. We create space for wishes in the real world with birthday candles, wishbones, fountain pennies, first stars, and numbers seen in sequence. There is so much superstition and whimsy that surrounds wishing, but we are always doing it, even if we are stalwart non-believers in any other sort of miracle. The words pass our lips at every age. Why? What is it about making a wish that makes it so easy to ask for? It is separate from region, religion, and dogma. It is something from our earliest memories no matter where we grew up, or what sort of environment.

Even those who do not think of things as simply as making a wish on a star as bringing something into our reality, still create wish lists. Sure these lists of desires, be they material or intangible, can be waved off as merely taking note of something we want or want to achieve, but why then call it a wish list?

There is power to those things we recall as children. If nothing else it brings a moment of joy when we toss that penny and hear it plunk into the water. We pause a moment to consider our thoughts when we see the numbers align on a digital clock, or note when our birth date is discovered in a random arrangement of digits. We make jokes about those three wishes, and warn others to be careful what they wish for.

What would be the point of these words if they did nothing at all. They change us, for a moment however brief, and whisper to a deep part of our consciousness that wants to believe.

Call it what you will, but a wish is a motivator. If we keep wishing and working toward that wish, or letting others know about our wishes, they are far more likely to come true. I think that is pretty magical. I will say this though, a wish should not be kept secret. Tell it to the world. Make that wish list. We never know when someone listening will turn out to be our genie or fairy godmother and make all of our wishes come true.

Where do you keep your list of wishes? Take a moment to tell someone three of your biggest wishes, even if you just leave them as a comment here.

Dream on. Wish on.

Writing Prompt: Admiration

Admiration. Most of us admire someone who has touched our lives. We are inspired to do better in their presences. We feel a bit nervous too, perhaps. It is a natural experience. At some point we have also been the object of admiration. What does that feel like?

I cannot think of just one person I have admired in my life. Experiencing the greatness of others brings me joy and at the same time a little bit of humility. At the same time, I have those exact feelings when someone shows admiration for my work, or just my energy. This past weekend put me in both positions equally.

As I walked down Main Street in Mesa, glimpsing the unique treasures offered by the local vendors selling pieces of themselves on Small Business Saturday, I admired the abilities of each of these men and women. I admired their drive to succeed at their passions and work the extra hours, or go without, to make their dreams happen. They are each offering a part of their lives to the people passing. Whether you bought something this Saturday or simply gave a small business owner a moment of your time, I admire you as well. Anyone who chooses to give a unique gift rather than stock up on the latest mass produced, soulless trinket, is just as deserving of admiration.

It is still strange to count myself among those who are “making it” in their dream. I often feel I am not doing enough, I am not good enough, I am just not enough. So, when I see admiration in the eyes of others, directed at me or my books, or dancing, or praise a reading I have done for them, I admit I am still trying to figure out what to do with that. I am thankful, more than anything. To the young girl who wanted to take my picture beside the banner for Trolls, thank you! To the student from Phoenix Center from the Arts who recognized my book and me, and showed so much excitement at seeing me again, thank you! You made this author’s day. To all of the people who help me in so many ways from publishing my books and seeing something in me I have trouble seeing, to those who help me get out of bed in the morning on those particularly low days, thank you. I admire your gifts and your strength.

This holiday season, as we shop for the material, keep sight of the intangible as well. Give the gift of admiration by letting others know what their presence means to your life. Tell them what you specifically admire about them.

Who do you admire most this year?

When were you in a position to be admired? How did that make you feel?

Tea Dueling with Captain Amara Deegan

I am a fan of tea. This is no secret. I typically have quite the stash of teas for any occasion, and appreciate when people share a few bags or loose ounces of their favorite teas with me. I am a fan of tea sets as well, though I have my favorites. I enjoy tea parties and am always looking for an excuse to host one, Mad Hatter or otherwise.

So, I was pleasantly shocked to discover there was something about the tea culture I was not previously aware of. I am sending a huge thank you to Jenn Aerilyn, also known as Captain Amara Deegan for introducing me to the fine art of Tea Dueling.

I confess to be wholly under the impression that Tea Dueling, or Tiffing, was an invention of the Steampunk societies and fans. I had no idea that this is in fact an event with quite the history.

Steeped (yes, a pun at last!) in history, the sport of Tea Dueling has been in existence since at least 1899 which the official rules are dated. It is a game for both gentlemen and ladies. The official Tea Dueling Societies as well as several Steampunk fan groups participate in these matches. There are regulation biscuits, regulation cup depths, and an entire list of rules to follow. This is some serious business! And it is far more fun than I expected after hearing it was essentially biscuit dunking and sassing your opponent.

There are three ways to lose a tea duel and all three are just a matter of how the biscuit crumbles. A Splash; which is to have your biscuit fall into your tea cup. A Splatter; landing your gooey biscuit on the table, floor, or anywhere other than the cup, unless you Sploge. A Sploge is the most shameful way to lose at a tea duel, and this is to land your mushy biscuit anywhere on your person. A true gentleman/ lady does not soil his/ her own clothing afterall.

Jenn Aerilynn introduced me to this at the November Red Tent night and I was hooked! I also lost in the most shameful way possible, with a sploge on my first go. I would love to see a round or three between Captain Amara Deegan and Captain Blackstrap Gennie, maybe with swords or rum involved.

The Clearing

It has been some time since I have posted anything to this particular blog, and while I would like to say that I will be more diligent, there are many other projects also occurring. So, I make no promises. I also, want to offer some brighter news from the front lines.

While I do not feel elated by this, my son has been allowed the opportunity to live with his father for a few months. There is all manner of emotion about this. I miss him. He and I are a team. Even when my now ex husband was away so often, hell, even when he was around though not really “present”, the kid and I would adventure together. We have a unique bond that only children and full-time moms can create. He is my light and joy, and though he is a sarcastic teen now, we are still deeply connected.

So, I do miss his presence in the house, but he needs to see how his father really parents without me there. He also needs to see what is really going on in his father’s life, even if that means learning to understand how to now address a girl that the kid always viewed as an older sister. I am not certain if he will see her as a “mother” figure now, or if the relationship will simply be confusing.

My roommate, and woman who professed to be my “best friend” has also moved on. She has never had strong regard for my feelings in our relationship, and I fully accepted this when I asked her to move in with me. The offer was meant to help her find her heart again. It was a new hurt when she chose to befriend the family members of as well as the girl who so deeply scarred my life, but while unexpected, I suppose it is not altogether out of character.

I am happy that she has found joy in the relationship that I set her up with. I am concerned for her dog that does not seem to get out very much, but I am grateful to not have the constant worry that something is going to happen to the poor animal while in my home or yard.

Now, the real blessings, for me. I am no longer afraid to come home. For quite some time, especially after my son moved out, I felt like an outcast under my own roof. I felt that the classes I taught, the people that I invited in, were an annoyance to my roommate. I felt as though I was responsible for her unhappiness and I tried hard to for several months to suppress who I was in order to make her feel more comfortable.

The energy is so much clearer now though! I feel that I can breathe without worry. And, with a clear house comes a clear head, and renewed energy to make my life my own at last.

My home is open to all of the wonderful women who dance here. I am also thrilled to invite men and women who write for gatherings and sharing ideas. As things progress I will be opening the doors to do tarot readings and host open discussions on art, writing, and other subjects. I have a gallery wall to share with new artists looking to sell their work as well. The Red Tent nights are a monthly gathering that I created as a gift to my roommate, to make her feel more comfortable, that I never expected to find so much joy in even after her desire to attend had waned.

I feel as if I can breathe and that every breath brings more positive energy into my home. Please contact me if you find any of this enjoyable! My home is open to all positive energy!

bint Hazine Auditions Beginning Soon!

As we continue to grow and change as a troupe and as members of the Phoenix bellydance community there are always new things to discover. bint Hazine will be opening auditions this Fall for the 2015 dance year! We will be seeking dancers willing to work as hard as they play, who understand that a troupe is more than learning a choreography in a group. bint Hazine is a sisterhood and with that comes a closeness that requires empathy and support for one another. We welcome women of all ages though our current members are in their 30’s and 40’s. Mature youths, as well as the young at heart are welcome.

Auditions will be Monday evenings and hosted in the home studio of AbeebA Korsana, in Glendale. Current and former students of AbeebA who have completed at least three sessions are invited to audition. A showcase of your talents will include; a one minute freestyle dance with music of troupe’s choice, demonstration of three of the five core bint Hazine songs, and a brief and fun interview by some of the current troupe members.

If you have been a member of the troupe before, please feel free to audition at this time as well! We miss you!

Troupe requirements for 2015 will be explained during the audition process. For more information on bint Hazine, classes with AdeebA Korsana, or belly dance in general please follow us on Youtube.com/easalle or Facebook.com/bint.hazine

Write Broken, Live Whole

Write drunk, edit sober. Hemingway and his words of broken-man wisdom. I want to write like a broken man. I want to write like a woman torn in two. I want to write like a soul dragged through hell and left at the feet of Saint Peter. I want to write like a mind rendered mad by the trials of life. I want to write like a beaten god, and a fallen angel. I want to write like there is a fever in me.

But. I do not want to be that broken vessel.

I want to be whole. I want to be innocent. I want to be free of the burdens of the earth and harsh reality. I want to be solid. I want to be stable. I want to be sober. I want to be sane. I want to be a heart unbroken and a mind unshattered. Remove the splinters of the days past. Be the child that only dreamed the nightmares I have lived. Let the dis-ease pass away.

I have been sober too long. I have been editing too long. I have lost sight of the glory of the madness and let it consume, rather than fuel me. Push, to be what they want. Push, to be what I think they want. Push. Fall. Let go. Be the madness, the master. Enslave the sanity.Stop letting them know what to expect.

In the Wings

As the emergence continues, the pattern of the wings begins to take shape. The image is not clear, but the colors grow brighter, less muddied in the light of the sun. The antennae twitch in search of what awaits.

How many can say they have known a friend for more than twenty years? How many can say they have been a friend for even half that time? I wrote on the falling apart of my marriage and some friendships last time, this time I want to focus on that which is sprouting from the wreckage.

As I prepare to take over care and payments on a house that I once shared with my husband of nearly sixteen years, I realize I do not want to do this on my own. I am independent, I enjoy my space, I have experienced stretches of time where I raised my son alone, but I do not want to right now. I need an ally. As events would have it, I am given one.

She is my dearest friend and trusted companion, a woman who experienced the daily and the strange in my life. Our paths have been similar before, even when not divergent. This though is a new trail the Universe has blazed and wants for us to travel side by side.

In May, her marriage too began to crumble away. She at first thought to try to make it on her own in a new state, a new place, somewhere away from the hurt she experienced. I realized, that this should be a sign. Through much discussion and the advice of others, we are moving to help one another.

At the end of January I will fly once more to Central New York to join her. Together we will make the drive that I made fourteen years before. The first time, my husband, small child and two cats made the drive in four days to start a new life. Now, my best friend, her young dog and I will attempt to make the trip in three days or less.

I am excited. I am terrified. I am intrigued by the timing. Our new adventure will begin as the Chinese year of the horse opens and we will find ourselves in Arizona as the Spring of that new year blooms. What does it mean?

Too many things have aligned in these last few months to be coincidence. Lay it on me Universe! I am ready!

A New Adventure Begins as the Scars from the Last are Revealed

So, here it is. The emergence of the butterfly. She knows not yet how to fly, but her wings are beginning to unfurl. In less obscure language, I am finally coming out of the dark place that was my life and finding something new and amazing on the other side.

About a month after I finally came clean with myself that my emotions were having a serious effect on my physical well-being my husband of fifteen years, my high school sweetheart, my first real love, the father of my son, announced that he was leaving me. If that stab was not enough, the reason; the twenty-year-old girl who used to babysit my son, a girl I basically raised and also trained as a dancer.

I knew. I knew for more than two years that there was something between them. I am no innocent. But, with projects, and goals, and writing, dance, plans, and yes, a side romance of my own, I made nothing of it. I never considered for a moment that this side dish would develop into something bigger.

She is younger than me, sure. She is cute and is comfortable and willing to dress in clothing that makes boys go all ga-ga. But, she has zero life experience, was still living with her mother. She had traveled little, and studied less. Her conversational skills are still that of a teenager. My son could outwit her. So, of course, I thought, let the man have his side dish. I am still his partner, his equal. Yeah. I was wrong.

They had sex in my bed. More than once. I asked them not to. They continued. While I was on my internship and away more often than not, she had essentially moved into my home. She had sent text messages to my husband saying she was “miffed” at me for taking time away from her. She told people I was no longer reliable. She posted comments and pictures of the two of them together. Other people I rarely spoke to confronted me about these public postings. She would offer me one hand, and yet continue actions to strike me with the other.

I gave in to my emotions. I attempted to take my life. I ended up in the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

I tried. For a few months, I tried to stay connected to this girl I mentored, stood up for, gave every opportunity to. Then, the waves of negative energy crashed. I could not be in the same room with this girl. I was angry. She told me I allowed all of this to happen. It was my fault. I should have seen it coming. The disappointing thing; I did see it coming. Rather I felt it.

I have always been sensitive to the emotions of others. I have always had an inkling as to where the threads of fate might lead. Because of who she was to me though, I ignored it. Why would someone I had given so much to want to take from me? Why would betrayal have ever crossed her mind?

Because the end game really is all about lessons. What have I learned from this? My trust was shaken to the core. What I understood about myself was that I can give and give and trust abundantly. Eventually, someone will take advantage. I also learned the painful lesson that sometimes it is best not to offer the benefit of the doubt when so many others are telling you that a person is toxic.

What has this offered me? A chance to start over. A chance to cut away the emotional dross. Allowance to say “no more”! I can see the people who truly love me, support me, need me in their lives as I need them in mine. From here I can make room for balanced relationships with strong, driven people, including the man who supported me through the publishing of my first book, my first stage shows, my internship, my growth in the art and geek community. Thank you Danna-sama.

As I shake off my old story I will continue to write the adventures of the new. I do not know the “how” of finding my new path, but have trust and support to take whatever comes.
